Design Process: Usability Testing

I wanted to test my design and the main thing to test was the navigation and if it was understandable what would happen in every step. I told the participants to Think Aloud during the process of performing three task in the UI. But first off, I put the participants in a scenario:

You are on a meeting and you are gonna have some sort of check-in, or reflection. You use Mentimeter as a tool for this and the question is asked on the screen.

I put this question on a TV with the little blob in the middle animating slowly

I then gave the participant the tasks. The first task was to choose Dislike. The second one was to choose Hopelessness. The third task was to finish off the whole flow like you normally would in Mentimeter. Afterwards I asked some questions to catch up some thoughts (if they did not talk about this while testing)

  • What do you think that the abstract illustration was?
  • Did you see or read the description of the emotion?
  • Did you understand that the “I’m done reflecting”/”Go to next” button wouldn’t actually send your answer to the screen?
  • What do you think that you were sharing to the big screen on the last step when you clicked the button “Yes, I would like to share it”/”Yes, submit”?

I tested one main navigation pattern, but I had four variations that I tested on nine participants. So in each new variation, something was added/changed and I tested them in the following order:

  1. Toggle (final screen was a slight variation too)
  2. Toggle + ”X”-button to clear
  3. Toggle + ”X”-button to clear + changed copy
  4. Toggle + ”X”-button to clear + changed copy + friction/onboarding
Toggle on the basic emotion to navigate backwards
In this variation you could toggle and use the ”X” to navigate backwards
I changed the copy on the blue buttons and ”Good job reflecting” to ”Thanks for Reflecting”
The exact same as (3) but with the small on-boarding/friction part in the beginning.

The tests were carried out in slots of 20 minutes in a small meeting room and everything went on really smoothly. In the next post I will write about the results and design changes because of this.
